Roth Conversions in Early Retirement: Tax Hack or Retirement Risk? | E208 Sean Mullaney

I love the little hacks for saving money on groceries, airfare, and transportation. But there’s a quieter expense that can be a real needle-mover when we focus on it: taxes.

For early retirees, Roth conversions can create an unusually attractive tax-planning opportunity. With little or no earned income, you may be able to move money from traditional retirement accounts into a Roth while paying taxes at relatively low rates. But that doesn’t necessarily mean every Roth conversion is a good idea.

In this episode, I sit down with Sean Mullaney, the FI Tax Guy and author of Tax Planning to and Through Early Retirement, to explore the hidden tradeoffs of Roth conversions. We discuss how conversions can interact with sequence-of-returns risk, ACA subsidies, withdrawal rates, and the decision of whether to pay taxes from cash or your portfolio.

We also tackle a bigger question: If you have money available today, should you use it to reduce a future tax bill or spend it improving your life now? Because sometimes the most tax-efficient decision isn’t necessarily the best decision for your early retirement.

Key Takeaways:

  • Understand why Roth conversions are so attractive in early retirement
  • Learn when paying taxes early can create unnecessary risk
  • See how Roth conversions can affect sequence-of-returns risk
  • Consider ACA subsidies before deciding how much to convert
  • Avoid common mistakes when executing Roth conversions
  • Balance tax optimization with the life you want today
